22Festival de Jazz Heineken Jazzaldia
The Machetazo is a new musical project formed by five young contemporary jazz musicians trained in the Conservatorio Superior the Música del País Vasco (Musikene) The origin of the band is placed in New York, the Mecca of every jazz musician, where it's five members moved in to broaden their studies with a master's degree that had previously taken them to the Netherlands. The starting conditions couldn't be better: the ideal city, the thrill and the urge to create. After finishing their academic training they move to Madrid, where they currently live, continuing to give form to their contemporary jazz band while teaching and developing their artistic skills in diverse musical groups, as a sideman or leading their own projects.
Although their music is mainly rooted in jazz, it breaks free from the conventions of the genre being arranged and performed with an unprecedented focus and sentiment in this musical style. And even though it could be traced to particular external structures the music is always sieved through a personal perspective. Their concerts are energetic, powerful and brilliant, richening the musical style with unusual nuances. The originality, creativity and mutual understanding of it's members find in the live performances the perfect carrier for the exploration of the soloists, making each show a positive energy discharge incapable of leaving the listener indifferent.
Unlike other artists that present themselves with the name of their leader, they are a true 'band' with a proper name that transmits the energy of their music, live performances and their ambition to break stylistic prejudices. The Machetazo is an instrumental group with very diverse influences, a sober jazz root and a lot of contemporary adventure cohabited by improvisation.

The five members of “The Machetazo” begin studying music form a very early age in different music schools and conservatories of their respective hometowns. They graduate 2014 specializing in Jazz interpretation in the Higher Conservatory of Music of the Basque Country (Musikene) to move to the Netherlands afterwards and obtain their master’s degree in the Prince Claus ConservatoriumConservatorium. The program formed part of and exchange with the Queens College University in New York, where they move between 2015 and 2016. During their stay in the Jazz’s Mecca (NY) they live together in a small Brooklyn apartment, become part of the music scene and receive lessons of the great jazz masters of the moment. It’s in that period where they decide to form the band “The Machetazo”. The energy of the city, the excitement, the urge to create, and the fact of living together rose an extraordinary complicity and musical understanding among them, the needed substrate to form the project that was going to arise.
